British Grime Pioneer Jamal Edwards Dead At 31

Everyone at SO.CO was saddened to hear of the untimely death of British urban music pioneer Jamal Edwards, who passed away on Sunday morning, following a live appearance in north London on Saturday night.

As the founder of SBTV, Edwards helped launch the careers of Dave, Ed Sheeran and Skepta, amongst others, and he was seen as a steering force in the British rap and grime scenes.

SBTV, which currently boasts 1.2m subscribers, was launched using “a £20 phone” and a frustration at not being able to find up and coming MCs online. It gave grime a place to grow, and exposed the genre to the wider world beyond London.

SO.CO CEO Vince Bannon interviewed Jamal at MIDEM in 2013. You can watch the full interview below.
